The 17th Ramadan is one of the significant dates in the Islamic calendar. It is the date of the Revelation of al Quran also known as Nuzul al Quran, which falls on the 6th August 2012.
The revelation brought to the Prophet is called "wahyu". The al-Quran was conveyed over a period of 23 years. The first verses being Verse 1 to 5 of Surah al-Alaq
IQRA’ BISMIRABBIKAL LADZII KHALAQ* KHALAQAL INSAANA MIN ‘ALAQ* IQRA’ WARABBUKAL AKRAM* ALLADZII ‘ALLAMA BILQALAM* ‘ALAMAL INSAANA MALAM YA’LAM*
- Read! In the name of your Lord Who created.
- Created man from a clot.
- Read! And your Lord is the most Honourable.
- Who taught the use of the pen.
- Taught man what he knew not.
(al-Alaq: 1-5)
Al-Quran is guidance and provider explanation for the man. The al-Qur’an also known an an-Nur which means light and al-Furqan which means to distinguish between rights and wrongs.
When one has understood the Al-Quran, a Muslim has the responsibility to share the teachings of the Al-Quran and will bear the responsibility of protecting and preserving the true words in every way possible.
Note
Al-Qur’an and hadiths sahih do not provide enough evidence on the exact date of nuzul Qur’an, though, except that it was on Laylat al-Qadr more or less during the last 10 days of Ramadan
